Mineral Carbonation International - We Provide Service to Transform CO2 Emissions From Any Industrial Source Into Various High Tech Applications, Building & Construction Products

An Australian led carbon engineering technology initiative for transforming CO2 emissions from any industrial source into valuable bulk materials for use in various building and construction products and high tech applications.

This is carbon utilisation.

We have developed an adaptable and scalable platform to help decarbonise industries like steel cement, manufacturing and mining.

With industrial partners we are developing novel low carbon applications for cements, mortars, plasterboards, binders and emerging climate adaptation and carbon engineering products.

We are locking CO2 away for good.

In 2019 we commenced commercialising our 7 year research pilot plant program funded by Australian Governments and Industry. Now with solid techno/economic validation of our technology, we are developing partnerships and investment in our global commercial opportunities.

Mineral carbonation is a natural process, we are accelerating it to store more CO2 safely and permanently for good.

MCi and Carbon Utilisation

Mineral Carbonation International (MCi) is an Australian based privately held company which is developing technology for carbon utilisation (CU). Its priority is to develop the technology platform for large scale transformation of CO2 into valuable products by combining with minerals or waste streams through an accelerated natural process called mineral carbonation.

Now as we scale this would assist as a transition technology for the major emitting industries as they move away from high carbon emissions to sustainable energy mixes and near zero carbon emissions.

It is estimated that by 2030 the market for carbon utilisation in industry will be around US $1 Trillion.

Our Story

MCi was founded in 2013 after 6 years of independent research by its founders GreenMag Group and Orica. The Australian Commonwealth and NSW Governments committed $AUD3.04m in grants to the MCi program following public funding processes which were matched by Orica Ltd as the industry funder who also committed $AUD3.04m.

MCi's headquarters are in Canberra and its research and technical facilities are located at NIER (Newcastle Institute for Energy Research) where it operates its pilot plant facility.

In 2017 MCi won further Commonwealth Government funding towards an $AUD8.3m program to advance the pilot program towards industrial applications by taking CO2 from raw flue gas as a CO2 capture process path from cement and steel industries as well as fossil fuel energy generators.

Now with solid techno-economics and a substantial portfolio of IP, MCi is commercialising its technology.

Our Technology

Technology Platform

MCi's carbon reactor

MCi has now designed and built three carbon reactor systems including its flagship, a purpose built generalised continuous research pilot plant. It was publicly launched by the NSW Minister for Energy and Resources along with industry and climate change think tanks and national media in July 2017.

This is the first such build of a purpose designed research pilot plant for CO2 mineral carbonation beyond laboratory scale in the world. Importantly it has allowed us to progress the science and engineering towards establishing the commercial feasibility of mineral carbonation as a carbon utilisation solution for industry without the need for a carbon price.

Our Approach

Developing a large scale solution to climate change requires sponsors and stakeholder support in government, industry, research, media and the public interest. Our Team is multidisciplinary and draws on talents in research, chemical engineering, policy, business, communications and management. We have been methodically moving through the technology readiness cycle (TRL), innovating, experimenting, designing, building and testing. We are focussed on reducing technical risks and developing the economic models that would allow for the wide spread adoption for our technology globally.

Our Progress

With generous funding and investment we have a dedicated Team advised by the best minds in our field and a program peer reviewed by our governments. We have been developing our technology platform for 11 years and focussed the last 5 years on our pilot plant program. We are now progressing with another 3 year funding agreement with the Commonwealth and our partners.

We are now aiming to have a design for a demonstration plant that could process 15,00-25,000 tonnes per annum of CO2. This would then scale roughly every 3 years to a further 10 fold scale increase in capacity. Ultimately a scale of 2 million tonnes of CO2 processed per plant is planned with our technology.

Our IP

MCi developed its program under research commercial secrecy. This has enabled us to build considerable knowhow in the newly emerging field of carbon utilisation. We have investigated many process routes including those with favourable economics into our technology stack.

All our IP is backed by lifecycle analysis and industry economic models. Our research and technology has been developed under the observation and peer review of our government and industry funders.

We have several patents awarded and provisionally protected patents, however much of our technology stack and know-how is not disclosed.

We are seeking partnerships with industrial companies in building products, cement, steel, engineering, power, waste processing, oil & gas, chemicals/ explosives & mining industries. Our technology can create valuable products for industry from CO2 / flue gas streams using mineral feedstocks. We are developing pre-feasibility studies for regional solutions.

We have the capability to carbonate many source feedstock materials on large scale (kgs/tonnes) to allow for new products to be developed through carbonation and can validate lab scale tests at scale to assess the techno/economic viability of a new material or product into market.

Our Researchers

Our core research team is based at the University of Newcastle in Australia. Our lead investigators, post-docs, and PhD students continue to work on the fundamental research themes that support our technology development. Our industrial scientists, process and chemical engineers bring industrial rigor, experience and implementation science to the pilot plant. We work with many other research organisations who have complementary themes that may assist in adoption of our solutions for global customers. University of Sydney, Columbia University and A*Star in Singapore are some key collaborators in our technology development.

Carbon Utilisation Field

The question asked with carbon utilisation is not "How much does it cost to store a tonne of CO2 away?" rather "How much value can we create from a tonne of CO2 - on scale?"

Advanced carbonation is now becoming a seriously researched and developed field as it differentiates itself as a technology for carbon utilisation. This is completely different from the CCS / geo-sequestration technology field.

Our scientific field is attracting funding from many governments including UK, EU, Canada, Singapore, Finland, Holland, South Africa and now China. The recent 2018 International ACEME Conference in Australia brought the world's lead researchers together to share our progress.


We welcome all solutions to CO2 Utilisation. Without collaboration there is no market. Some of the first entrants into the market are complimentary to MCi's platform such as Carbon8 in the UK which is processing air pollution residues into aggregates profitably. This is a pollution management solution but still uses CO2 as the transforming agent in the process.

Many cement and concrete solutions are now being developed through CO2 Utilisation.


We believe climate solutions must have and maintain social license from the inception. We engage with many of the environmental groups and think tanks globally and provide briefings to them, governments and industry on the lifecycle impact of our technology platform to decarbonise industry and create value.
