Carbonfree Chemicals’ patented SkyMine® technology offers a new and much improved way to capture carbon emissions, and store those CO2 gases permanently and safely.

Before now, the best way to deal with greenhouse gases was to “pump them into the ground.” Carbonfree Chemicals’ vision is to have new or existing industrial manufacturing facilities, refineries, or even power plants equipped (or retrofitted) with SkyMine® technology. This technology will remove carbon from flue gases and transform it into solids like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and also produce hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, and bleach.

Why solids? There is no need for pipeline transport, injection, or concern about CO2 “re-release,” like with other carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), mineralization, or carbon storage processes.

Carbonfree Chemicals’ has developed patented technology solutions for the capture and utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) in mineral form (carbonates).

Our proprietary processes result in useful products, such as baking soda, that make our facilities built at industrial manufacturing and power plants profitable.

Carbonfree Chemicals’ three primary technologies include SkyMine®, SkyScraper™, and SkyCycle™. These processes require less energy to remove harmful pollutants and safer ways to store carbon.

Most importantly, there is no need for pipeline transport or the compression and injection of carbon into the earth, so Carbonfree Chemicals’ CCU technologies avoid unnecessary costs and risks associated with traditional CCS.


Introducing a more efficient, less expensive way to capture harmful pollutants. The SkyMine ® process is a patented technology that can be implemented for new industrial manufacturing plants, refineries, power plants, and steel mills, or can be retrofitted to current stationary emitting sources.

The premise of the SkyMine® technology is to remove carbon dioxide (CO2), acid gases such as sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other heavy metals from industrial waste streams. Carbonfree Chemicals captures these harmful pollutants from flue gases and transform them into marketable products, such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, and bleach.

The first SkyMine® facility began operations March 2015 in San Antonio, Texas at Capitol Aggregates cement plant. The plant equipped with SkyMine® technology will reduce its carbon emissions by 15 percent – 75,000 tons of CO2 annually. Carbonfree Chemicals constructed, installed, and maintains the SkyMine® equipment and systems at Capitol Aggregates.

Part of the Carbonfree Chemicals’ portfolio is another carbon capture technology called SkyScraper. This is a crucial link for refining, power, and other industrial manufacturing facilities to safely cut back plant emissions that are harmful pollutants to the environment.

This post-combustion carbon-capture and scrubbing technology can remove virtually all sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), mercury, and other heavy metals emitted from flue gases (97-99 percent). Like SkyMine®, it can be easily retrofitted to existing infrastructures or implemented as a new facility is being planned or built.

Another important tool in the Carbonfree Chemicals portfolio of patented emission-capture technologies is SkyCycle®. With this “thermolytic decarbonation” process, Carbonfree Chemicals is able to use waste heat instead of electricity to power its carbon-capture-and-utilization process.

CO2 emissions can be captured and stored as carbon-negative products, such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), while the plant also produces hydrochloric acid, caustic soda and household bleach.

Located in San Antonio, Texas, Carbonfree Chemicals is expected to capture 75,000 tons annually of otherwise-emitted CO2 from the coal-fired Capitol Aggregates Cement plant, and avoid a total of 205,000 tons of annual US CO2 emissions by shipping CO2-negative chemicals to market and displacing CO2-intensive products. Our process also removes mercury, metals, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate – and returns clean air and clean water.

Carbonfree Chemicals produces commercially saleable products of hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and bleach, which can be sold through chemical off-take contracts, and generate annual revenue even without an active CO2 credit market.

The SkyMine® process requires 30% less energy use to remove CO2 than the more common amine-based CO2 capture technology, which led to the US Department of Energy awards (2009-2010) of $28 million to develop this first commercial CO2-beneficial reuse SkyMine® commercial project. It was the largest grant of six carbon-reuse projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the only one completed. More than 250 jobs were created during design and construction of the plant. During operation, there are permanent jobs at the plant and another 200+ permanent jobs in the local economy. Of the permanent on-site positions, approximately 1/3rd are engineers, 1/3rd operational technicians, and 1/3rd a combination of professional management and engineers—high-paying technical jobs.
